Bangkok Skyline & Parties

I’ve been pushing back my stay here in Thailand for a number of reasons…warm beaches, spicy food and an adventure that just wont quit. I’ve been meaning to post more pictures but here are just some quickies from my point and shoot.

Only in Thailand will you see bull elephants at a house party. My brother, Gary.

Morocco, Rome, Ghana + California black and whites

I finally developed some rolls of film that I had in my camera bag for months. Developed them in San Francisco but I’m not to happy with the outcome. A little too contrasty and grainy but nonetheless still fun to get back.

Most of these are 35mm black and white film. A couple are 120 film shot with my plastic Holga.

MOROCCO

Roommate, Said, and friend Matt. We're waiting at the Tangier, Morocco ferry. This is the beginning of our roadtrip from Rabat, Morocco to Seville, Spain. Nothing but trouble.

GHANA

Palm wine seller on the beach front near Kokrobite, Ghana. After i took this shot i tried the palm wine and noticed the water they were using to ferment the wine and clean the bucket. Water as brown as the dirt. I ended up with the worst stomach flu I've ever had. 120 film

To California and a New Life!

So after 5.5 years of working at Operation Smile I’ve made a dramatic change of pace and direction in my life. I’ve moved without a plan to find myself among the open hearts, towering redwoods, rolling golden hills and dramatic ocean cliffs of Northern California. I plan to be wandering these parts until my next trip to Bangkok, Thailand in December.

I am in complete awe of the beauty here in this part of the country. It is great to discover such gems such as this. Soon however my mornings in the tents will be gloomy and wet as the inevitable cold winters roll through these parts. I have to make use of the rare sunny warm days now!

I haven’t been taking too many pictures as I’ve been busy with farm work but below are some pics of the outdoors and the surrounding areas.

Camping trip at Sinkyone National Park. The most amazing view from the barn we stayed at. The barn was only 10 meters behind from where i took this photo.

This wasn't part of the parade, but rather a street side play. I thought the picture was fitting.

Crashing Horses & Riding Waves

Local rider leading his horse out of the water.

Fantasia is a traditional cultural equestrian show in Morocco used during cultural festivals. Its spectacle that stems from the Berber war-times that shows off their strength and ability.  The riders, generally around 10-20, line up in a row and accelerate down the field in complete unison. After 200 meters the riders fire ‘old style gun powdered’ rifles. The aim is to act as one. That is, to ride at the same speed and fire at the exact same time.

During the month of July over 200 horses and their crews gathered at the small town of Dar Bouazza, about 20 km south of Casablanca. Coincidentally the same town where I surf. In the mornings when I would drive through the town I would see the crews lead their horses into the waves to wash them. These boys grow up with these horses. Dar Bouazza transformed from a sleepy town to circus over run by kids riding bareback all hours of the day.  I decided to skip surfing one morning and shoot pictures of the crews with their horses in the waves.

These kids were fearless on these horses. It was impressive to watch them manage these horses as they bucked and charged through the waves.

To tame the horses they would turn the horses and back them up through the waves.

WORDS and CONCEPTS are RIGID and MOTIONLESS, but rEalitY is a steadily flowing stream. It is impossible to contain a living reality in a RIGID FRAMEWORK.” Thus, to be alive is to drop whatever creates a rigid framework, and accept the ever-changing flow of life.   – Charlotte Kasl on Thich Nhat Hanh.
